Shaving Advice

Shaving for most men is a painful experience. A great percentage of men use incorrect shaving techniques due to lack of time, habit or interest, but with only minor changes to their shaving routine, most men can achieve a closer and more comfortable shave using our Shaving Solutions & Instructions.

Preparing your skin

The key to an ultimate shave is preparing your skin. Always shave during or after a hot shower, heat and moisture helps to soften the beard and prepare the skin for the shave. If you shave before use a hot wash cloth and apply to beard for a few seconds. Always use hot water while shaving. Hot water softens the beard, opens the pores and cleanses the skin.

Step # 1 Apply Pre Shave Oil

The New York Shaving Company Pre Shave Oil is an innovative shaving solution designed to soften the beard and protect the skin from the razor blade. Reduces irritation, ingrown hairs and razor bumps.

Place a small amount of oil into the palm of your hands, with two hands work into face and beard before applying shave cream.

Step # 2 Apply Shaving Cream

Use our glycerin based Shaving Cream for a close & comfortable shave.

Developed for all skin types, our shave cream solution protects the skin from nicks, cuts, razor burn, irritation and ingrown hairs. Shaving cream may be rubbed into the beard with the fingers, but the best results are obtained when using The New York Shaving Company Shaving Brush made from badger hair.

Dip the brush into hot water and flick off the excess water, Scoop out about a nickel to a quarter size of shave cream and insert it on the tip of the brush. Dip again in hot water and lather on the face in a circular motion.

Shave

Choose a clean, sharp blade. Use

The New York Shaving Company Razor which provides proper weight for better control (We Recommend a Safety Razor).

Avoid applying too much pressure with your razor since this is often the cause of skin irritations. Always glide the razor gently over your face.

Always shave with the grain first (in the direction the hair grows). Shaving against the grain first can cause ingrown hairs and razor burn.

Check to see whether the hair on your neck grows in the same directions as the hair on your face. If it doesn't, make sure you adjust accordingly to shave with the grain.

For an even closer shave, re-lather and shave lightly against or across the grain. Re-lathering should only require dipping the brush in hot water again and not having to apply more shaving cream to the brush. Rinse the blade in hot water frequently. Remember to replace the blade often. A dull blade is also a common cause for razor burn and irritation.

Step # 3 Soothe and Moisturize

After shaving, rinse your face with cold water to close the pores of the skin. Pat the skin dry and apply our alcohol-free soothing and moisturizing aftershave balm. Avoid after-shaves which contain alcohol: these can irritate and dry out the skin.
